The Commack Fire Department was one of the original departments to begin FIRE PREVENTION training in the schools of Commack. We were the first fire department in Suffolk County to purchase and utilize a FIRE PREVENTION trailer.
The trailer has taken the training of Commack school children to a new level of reality utilizing a harmless smoke to simulate what conditions would be like in the home if there were a fire. Children are taught how to stop, drop and roll, train for the nearest and safest exit from their home and to take back to their families what they have learned and what needs to be practiced in their homes. They are taught to go to a safe spot designated by the parents in case of an emergency. The trailer also has simulators to teach other safety in the home such as kitchen and electrical hazards.
Our FIRE PREVENTION team under the direction of Ex Captain Joe Barberia have attended classes and are constantly updating their program so that Commack’s children have the most up to date training available. The team trains in excess of 5,000 children every year. Joe has been recognized as an “Outstanding Fire Educator” by Suffolk County. Joe and his team do this training in their spare time when they are not at work, not responding to alarms and not spending time with their own school age children and family.
The FIRE PREVENTION program of the Commack Fire Department is specifically designed to be taught in at the primary grades in the Commack School District. The team works closely with the schools administration in order to schedule the dates and times that the trailer and team will be at the schools. Classes come outside to the trailer where they are presented the program in a class by class setting. The children experience this wonderful program with their classmates so they can have further discussions amongst themselves and the teacher after the presentation.
For information regarding this program teachers and school administrators can contact Joe Barberia by calling 499- 6690 ext 41.
Families can also experience the FIRE PREVENTION trailer at our open house in October of each year during fire prevention week. Look for the date and time on our message board in front of headquarters or on this website.
Those families living in the Commack Fire District can be proud to know that fire prevention is taken seriously and by training in the schools we can reach all the families in our district.
